In this touching and intimate work of autofiction, Iannicko N’Doua takes us on a coming-of-age journey across years and continents, guided by a griot with a thousand faces, played by the charismatic Hamadoun Kassogué. Initially, the playwright and performer believes he is merely searching for his father, but he discovers a whole country where part of his family and heritage are flourishing.
More than 20 years after his father left Montréal to return to his homeland, a young theatre student sets off from that city for Côte d’Ivoire to meet him, armed with a host of questions and hopes. Between the hustle and bustle of Abidjan and the silence of his patriarch, Iannicko charts a course toward a missing part of himself. Authentic family photographs and excerpts from letters are projected onto dreamlike screens. Director Marc Beaupré’s staging mirrors the pace of this thread of memory that quietly unspools before our eyes.
A fragmented family, culture shock, acts of reconciliation and love: the themes of this search for identity apply not only to the person describing them with great sensitivity, but to the human experience as a whole. With gentleness and humour, the Singular addresses the Plural.
