Jazz, spirituals, poetry, misty landscapes, and gathering storms take you through three musical universes
A few things to know …
Honey and rue, mist and storms: this program moves between vivid musical worlds, from Toni Morrison’s poetry and André Previn’s blend of jazz and spirituals to the wild landscapes of Mendelssohn’s Scotland.
South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu joins conductor Roderick Cox for Previn’s Honey and Rue, six settings of poems by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison exploring loneliness, love, sacrifice, and the experience of Black women in America.
Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony takes you through misty landscapes, ancient ruins, gathering storms, and flashes of celebration, inspired by the composer’s own journey through Scotland.
In Honey and Rue, André Previn brings together classical music, jazz, and African American spirituals with the poetry of Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison. Soprano Vuvu Mpofu gives voice to six poems that move from loneliness and longing to love and self-sacrifice, with Roderick Cox leading the NAC Orchestra.
Then, travel to Scotland with Felix Mendelssohn. When the 20-year-old composer visited the country, its mysterious landscapes, ancient ruins, and stormy weather left a lasting impression. His “Scottish” Symphony transforms those memories into music, moving from haunting, mist-covered landscapes to wild storms and a jubilant finale.
The evening opens in another striking landscape with Jocelyn Morlock’s Cobalt. Inspired by the deep blue colour of the sky just before darkness, this hypnotic NAC Orchestra commission puts Concertmaster Yosuke Kawasaki and Associate Concertmaster Jessica Linnebach in the spotlight.
