Events Description
Kamancello, comprised of Shahriyar Jamshidi and Raphael Weinroth-Browne, is an East-meets-West duo whose music transcends genres and cultural boundaries. Their highly evocative improvised performances unite the Kurdish kamanche with the classical cello while travelling beyond both musical traditions.
The duo has made waves with performances at Montreal’s Place des Arts for Festival du Monde Arabe, the Canadian Opera Company, the Aga Khan Museum’s concert series, the National Arts Centre, Shenkman Arts Centre, and the Cello Biennale Amsterdam.
Recorded in one take, their self-titled debut album, which includes 6 improvised pieces, has been met with unanimous critical acclaim. In May 2019, Kamancello made their orchestral debut performing their own double concerto “Convergence Suite” with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to an enthusiastic sold-out audience. Following the release of their second album, Kamancello II: Voyage in summer 2019, the duo travelled to Newfoundland’s west coast for a week-long residency where they collaborated with local musicians. Kamancello’s third full-length album Of Shadows was released in 2020. In January 2024, they will make their debut with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
