Events Description

Mikael Sandblom’s exhibition Clouds and Waves at Gallery 1313 extends the contemplation of the landscape into a deeper exploration of memory, perception, and the nature of consciousness.
Sandblom’s work is based on extensive observations of the sky and the surface of water, of clouds and waves. Rather than a literal depiction of these phenomena, the artwork represents the experience of sustained attention interwoven with a free-associative state of mind that is induced when you look at nature very carefully.
Images in the show are derived from photography, 3D software, and other computer graphics. The artwork itself is executed in a variety of media including painting, textiles, and digital prints on opaque and transparent surfaces. The wide variety of modes of representation encourages one to notice the act of reading an image; to become aware of how the depicted subject, and by extension, all reality is constructed in the mind. Coloured thread in a tapestry or a simple graphic of lines can both become waves on water far beyond the surface of the material. Clouds become mountains, cities, and the spaces where the past is recalled and re-enacted.
Contradictory geometries materialize and dissipate, while fragments of memory intermingle with imagined structures. The art pieces embody a form of dream logic, positioning the viewer as an active participant in the creative process.
Approach Sandblom’s artworks as you would observe clouds and waves outdoors. Allow yourself to become immersed in their geometric complexity, and remain attentive to the unexpected pathways your thoughts may explore.

Cell Gallery: CONESTRUCTION by Viz Saraby
Artist Talk: Sunday, October 13, 2:00 pm
Cone is thrilled to introduce ‘Conestruction’ at Gallery 1313!
Cone invites you join his quest and to visit his personal road-based vision for safe spaces: ‘Conestruction’, located at Galley 1313 from Oct 9-20th.
Since his youthful days in the early 1900s, Cone has been obsessed with safety. He’s like a vigilant guardian, always on the lookout for lurking dangers, ready to spring into action to shield others from harm’s way. Cone’s bravery often leads him to confront peril head-on, willingly putting himself in harm’s path!
However, lately, Cone’s journey has hit a rough patch. As his physical form shifted from rubber to plastic over the years, so too did his emotional landscape. The values he once held dear and the social norms he adhered to have undergone a profound evolution.
In this modern era, the concept of ‘safety’ has taken on new dimensions. It’s not just about physical protection anymore; now, it encompasses psychological well-being. Trust, empathy, and open communication are the cornerstones of this newfound definition. Cone finds himself grappling with how to navigate this shifting paradigm. He names his quest ‘Conefusionism’ (cone-fused with-onism and/or cone + confusion), a journey of self-discovery amidst the chaos of everyday life.
Cone, keen to try to blend physical and psychological safety into his daily life, has been exploring various ‘safe spaces’. To his surprise these spaces lack any proper safety equipment – no harnesses, no hard hats, or personal protective equipment! He sees this as a major oversight. Instead, these environments are solely designed as judgment-free zones to foster inclusion, empathy, and emotional well-being.
Given his background, and his diverse and complex social network, Cone hopes to improve on the model, and create road-based safe spaces that can provide physical protection as well as become havens where all cones are accepted for who they truly are.

Window Box Gallery : Transformative Access at The Window Box Gallery, September 1st 2024 – April 30th 2025 Over the tall, brick wall across from the Dollarama, you may catch a bright reflection of light. This is the Window Box Gallery, which is accessible via the entrance courtyard of Gallery 1313 (1313 Queen Street West, www.g1313.org). It will be populated with bursts of colour, insight, and transformational visions from September 1st 2024 – April 30th 2025.Throughout the length of this project, three emerging Toronto artists will present solo exhibitions;Harmeet Rehal (Sept. 1, 2024 – Oct. 30, 2024), Sunshine Torme Johnson (Nov. 1, 2024 – Dec. 30, 2024), and Hollis McConkey (Jan. 1, 2025 – Feb. 28, 2025), will take on the challenge of investigating how the disabled bodymind informs and constructs the transformation of itssurroundings through the knowledges of lived experience. Using both the works themselves andthe mediums in which they are displayed through, the artists will showcase desire, friction and care through the disability lens, and the intimate places it intersects the whole of the artists.Over that brick wall, you will find Crip Horizons.
