Toronto
Events Description
The concert begins with Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3,” a stirring piece drawn from his opera Fidelio, evoking the triumph of freedom over oppression. Acclaimed Canadian violinist Corey Gemmell (also Orchestra Toronto’s concertmaster!) joins as soloist for Prokofiev’s “Violin Concerto No. 1,” a lyrical and dreamlike work that showcases early 20th century modernism with unexpected delicacy. The evening concludes with Strauss’s evocative Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration), a sweeping tone poem portraying an artist’s final moments and spiritual ascent.
