Events Description
It’s a question the artists of The Mirror face with curiosity and fearlessness, using their bone-jarring physicality and extraordinary acrobatic precision to explore the connection between self-love and self-expression. High-impact acrobatics spill off the stage, accompanied by a pulsing lighting and video design featuring an LED wall combining video art and live feed from multiple handheld cameras.
Immersed in richly layered electronic compositions and pop mashups, the acrobats keep pushing their outer limits while simultaneously questioning the act of performance itself. In The Mirror, together with director Darcy Grant, the artists explore the concept of entertainment through the language of contemporary circus and question what the modern human finds entertaining. Where does entertainment end and art begin? What does authenticity mean in an age of ever present screens and permanent self-promotion?
The high-level dance and acrobatics in the piece are offset by an innovative contemporary design, using an LED wall, cameras, and selfie sticks. Highly expressive, playful, and accompanied by the outstanding electronic compositions and pop mashups of composer Ekrem Eli Phoenix, with music performed by Australian singer and actor Megan Drury, the artists of award-winning, world-renowned circus company Gravity & Other Myths set out on a search for the “true” self.
