Events Description
Established in 2019, Toronto’s Women From Space Festival has become one of the city’s ultimate destinations for adventurous listeners, with each subsequent edition boasting yet another ravenously eclectic cast of cutting-edge performers from across various music genres and beyond. The festival has previously featured such celebrated artists as Mali Obomsawin, Matana Roberts, Amirtha Kidambi, Susan Alcorn, Patricia Brennan, Lina Allemano, Lotte Anker, Eve Egoyan, Kris Davis, Nicole Mitchell, and Judith Berkson.
2025
March 8th
- Allison Cameron kicks off the festival with Small Scale Experimental Machine, a solo performance incorporating electronics, field recordings, surround sound, video, and audience participation. Julian Cowley has described her work as “cryptic yet beautiful.”
- Trio Plastic Babies, featuring acclaimed vocalists Laura Swankey and Christine Duncan alongside guitarist Patrick O’Reilly, returns to the festival to launch their debut recording, produced by Jean Martin.
- BIG BANG! Ensemble presents a tribute to Nina Simone, with arrangements by Vanese Smith (Pursuit Grooves), Mingjia Chen, Madeleine Ertel, Olivia Shortt, Tania Gill, and Alexa Belgrave, performed by a large ensemble including Tara Kannangara, Shn Shn, Elisabeth Dorion, and many more.
March 9th
- Electronic/Dance Collaboration brings together Toronto Dance Theatre and experimental musicians Shn Shn and Rosina Kazi (of LAL) for a unique performance alongside waacking specialist Chantelle Mostacho and TDT’s Erin Poole.
- Yuniya Edi Kwon, a New York-based artist blending voice, violin, composition, improvisation, ritual, and movement, has been praised by The Wire Magazine and The Washington Post as a standout creative force.
- Yuka Honda’s EUCADEMIX features the co-founder of Cibo Matto delving into electronic experimentation alongside Kyoto-born butoh dancer Azumi OE, known for her fusion of performance art, music, and visual design.
March 10th
- Meara O’Reilly’s Hocket For Two Voices is performed by Mingjia Chen and Linnea Sablosky, offering an intricate and organic vocal interplay that Pitchfork likened to “bursting bubbles.”
- Arusha Jain (AKA @modularprincess) fuses contemporary experimental electronic music with traditional Indian idioms, earning praise from Pitchfork, Bandcamp, The Guardian, Boiler Room, Ableton, Resident Advisor, and more.
- Myra Melford’s Fire and Water Trio closes the festival with a performance featuring Ingrid Laubrock (saxophones) and Lesley Mok (drums, percussion), bringing together three of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz. Melford, a decorated pianist and composer, has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards throughout her career.
