Events Description
Poculi Ludique Societas (PLS) and the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies (CRRS) present “York Plays 2025″—the first full-scale production of the medieval York Corpus Christi Plays in 27 years. This free, day-long theatrical marathon at the University of Toronto’s Burwash Quad will feature 50 biblical plays performed on replica 14th-century wagon stages by 17 North American theatre troupes, reviving a tradition last seen in York, England, over 600 years ago.
Why It’s Newsworthy:
🎭 A Generational Event: Younger scholars and theatre artists will witness the complete cycle for the first time, offering unprecedented insights into medieval drama.
⏳ Dawn-to-Midnight Spectacle: Performances begin at 6:00 AM and continue past midnight, mirroring the original guild processions.
🏰 Authentic Medieval Staging: Movable wagons, costumed actors, and surviving Middle English texts (adapted for modern audiences) will bring history to life.
📚 Academic Impact: PLS’s 1977 and 1998 productions revolutionized medieval theatre studies—this revival continues that legacy.
🆓 Free & Family-Friendly: Perfect for history buffs, theatre lovers, and kids (with content advisories for select plays).
