Events Description

We know you’ve been waiting for another iteration of Tiles & Togetherness and more time to play, so we’re bringing you non-stop freeplay for the whole event! In this fifth iteration, we’ll be hosting mahjong outdoors in collaboration with Yarrow Society & Growing Together in Community. Enjoy the sun, but don’t burn up in the game!

Our instructor Chantal will be available to teach folks at our 2 designated beginner tables. Learn the basics of Hong Kong mahjong. We suggest you bring a notebook and pen to jot down any tips.

We encourage new players to buddy up on one side of the table or observe a game if you’d like to watch first! Chantal and several volunteers will be around to check in on the gameplay if you have questions. Don’t be shy, all levels welcome!

Please note that no gambling is allowed at this event, and we ask that folks keep beverages and food off the mahjong tables!

In the face of ongoing gentrification, it\’s crucial for us to unite in support of our Chinatown and DTES communities, honor our elders and their cultural heritage, and revel in the collective joy of artistic expression.
Through each Chinatown Together event, we are dedicated to backing grassroots efforts, amplifying the genuine voices of our community, reclaiming our cultural roots and safe spaces, and standing firmly united against encroaching gentrification. Celebrating community joy is our most powerful resistance to these forces – let\’s come together and celebrate in Chinatown as one!
