Edmonton was not awarded the games. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi said in a statement, “Today, I am disappointed to announce that Edmonton was not successful in our bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2026. We advocated fiercely, we had our provincial and federal government partners on board to provide funding, and most of all, we had the support of Edmontonians,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.
Alberta Minister of Culture Ron Orr also issued a statement, “We share in the collective disappointment with soccer fans here in Alberta and across Canada that Edmonton was not chosen as one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It is unfortunate that soccer fans will not experience the beauty and vibrancy of Edmonton and our province as a whole. Alberta’s government worked hard and committed a significant financial sum to help the bid along. Our province has hosted countless world-class sporting events. Commonwealth Stadium is the biggest facility in Western Canada and would play an excellent host.”
Toronto will host multiple matches at BMO Field and major fan events across the city for the duration of the 32-day tournament. FIFA will determine at a later date which tournament matches will be played in Toronto.
Toronto Mayor John Tory said, “On behalf of the residents of Toronto and Council, I am delighted that Toronto has been chosen as a host city for FIFA World Cup 2026. There is no bigger sports tournament on the planet and it will be an opportunity to welcome the world and showcase all that our city has to offer to a global audience.”
Vancouver games will be played at B.C. Place. “British Columbia welcomes the world for FIFA World Cup 2026,” said Premier John Horgan. “We’re not hosting the largest ever World Cup just for kicks. British Columbians will enjoy an economic boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors that will be felt for years to come. We look forward to welcoming the global soccer community to our province.”
British Columbia estimates that the tournament could bring more than $1 billion in new revenue to B.C.’s tourism sector during the tournament and in the five years following, depending on the number of matches played in Vancouver.
As per the news release, the estimated costs for planning, staging and hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026 in B.C. range from $240 million to $260 million.
Vancouver hosted FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.
Back in 2018, FIFA announced that Canada, Mexico and the United States will jointly host the world’s most extraordinary sporting event.
Twenty-two cities had submitted a bid to host the games:
- Canadian cities: Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver
- United States cities: Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Mo., Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C./Baltimore
- Mexico: Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey
The 2026 World Cup will feature a total of 80 matches. Canada and Mexico will host 10 matches each and 60 of the prominent matches including all from the quarterfinals to the finals will be played in the United States.
Canada is hosting the men’s FIFA World Cup for the first time. Mexico becomes the first country to host the men’s games (previously in 1970 and 1986) three times. The United States hosted the men’s FIFA World Cup previously in 1994.
