Ontario to Hold Electricity Rates to Reduced Off-Peak Price During Lockdown Starting Jan 1, 2021

Ontario government has announced that to support people as they stay home during the Provincewide Shutdown, the government will hold electricity prices to the off-peak rate of 8.5 cents per kilowatt-hour for all time-of-use and tiered customers on a temporary basis starting January 1, 2021.

This low rate will be available 24 hours per day, seven days a week for a 28-day period. Update (Feb 10): The rebate is extended until February 22, 2021.

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) had announced an increase in rates starting November 1, 2020. The off-peak rate in the plan is 10.5 ¢/kWh. On January 1, the rate will reduce to 8.5 ¢/kWh for 24 hours per day including peak time.

What is the rebate/new rate: From January 1 to February 22, 2021 (updated on Jan 28th and Feb 10) residential, small business and farm customers that buy their electricity from their utility and are on the OEB’s Regulated Price Plan (RPP) will pay the fixed 8.5 ¢/kWh price for all hours of the day, every day of the week. This fixed price applies whether the customer is on Time-ofUse (TOU) or Tiered pricing.

“As we enter a Provincewide Shutdown, our government is ensuring that all households have stable and predictable electricity bills when they need it most,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, Minister of Indigenous Affairs. “Staying home means using more electricity, especially during the day when electricity prices are usually higher. We will continue to support hardworking families and small businesses doing their part by staying home.”

The government says the price change will automatically be credited on ratepayers’ bills.
