Shake! Shiver! Shovel!: Farmers’ Almanac Releases Long Range 2023 Winter Weather Forecast

The Old Farmers’ Almanac has released the 2023 long-range winter weather forecast and is calling for winter with some record-breaking cold temperatures, plenty of snow, rain, and mush.

Dubbing the 2023 winter season a time to “Shake! Shiver! Shovel!”, Farmers’ Almanac says Eastern Canada will experience a stormy season due to an active storm track from the western Gulf of Mexico into the Maritime Provinces.

The storm may cause “a good number of cold rains and storms filled with snow, sleet, ice, and rain” across Maritimes. The areas north and west of the storm, Labrador, Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, and the Great Lakes, will see plenty of snow.

The organisation which uses a unique formula to predict long-range weather says the Prairie provinces can expect “tons of snow in both January and February”, while British Columbia will see a “decent” skiing season with an average amount of winter precipitation.

Ontario and Quebec can expect a “decent” amount of snow around January 20th to 23rd,   while Prairie Provinces can expect the same around January 24th-27th.

While it is not possible to predict whether Canada’s Groundhogs will see their shadows in 2023, the Farmers’ Almanac says ” a possible Nor’easter that may drop as much as 30-60 centimetres of snow in some areas just after Groundhog’s Day.”

As for winter temperatures, Canadians can expect “one of the coldest arctic outbreaks in recent years” in January.

The Rockies and Prairies might see “potential of heavy snows, followed by a sweep of bitter cold air” during the first week of January, while the eastern two-thirds of the country might experience temperatures 40° below zero following heavy snow and rain predicted around January 16-23, 2023.

Farmers’ Almanac also says Canadians can expect a “lion-like end to March” with a variety of weather conditions from heavy snows to torrents of rain to gusty thunderstorms and stormy weather across much of the nation.
