The CRTC, working alongside Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), collects detailed network data from service providers. That information is shared with ISED and used to power the National Broadband Map, which shows Internet availability across the country

In a decision released today, the CRTC approved the release of more detailed information about local service options. The expanded data will identify specific providers, technologies, and available speeds by area. The goal is to enable Canadians to compare services more easily and to support future investments to improve connectivity.

The National Broadband Map offers a national and regional view of retail Internet services and government-funded broadband projects. Users can zoom in on specific locations to see differences between urban and rural connectivity.

The commission also launched a public consultation focused on cellphone coverage. The review will examine how coverage data is collected and reported, with the aim of improving accuracy and consistency. The CRTC says improved reporting will help governments, public safety agencies, service providers, and consumers identify coverage gaps and areas needing improvement, while also reducing the burden on companies submitting data.

Comments will be accepted until March 16, 2026. Submissions can be made online, by mail to the CRTC’s Secretary General in Gatineau, Quebec, or by fax at 819-994-0218.
