Calgary Fire crews rescued a man today from being compacted in a garbage truck.
As per the news release by the city, a garbage truck driver called for emergency rescue after seeing a person in the back of the truck.
The city says a garbage truck was emptying a dumpster into the truck at the 3000 block of 17th Avenue S.E. after compacting the contents of the previous load when the driver heard a sound in the truck. While trying to locate the source through the truck camera, he saw a person trapped in the garbage and immediately stopped the operation.
The EMS crew who were first on site at 10:20 a.m. today were unable to rescue the man. The Calgary Fire Department subsequently called Technical Rescue Team who successfully freed him who was breathing and conscious.
The news release reads, “He was put into a special hard back harness and under some of his own power, was lifted by rescuers out of the garbage truck and lowered to the ground.”
District Chief Brent Neil who was on the scene said, “had the garbage truck been full, his injuries would have been much more serious if not fatal.”
The rescuee was transported to the hospital by EMS after an initial assessment found that he sustained only moderate injuries from the compaction process.
