Border officials confiscated a staggering 406.2 kilograms of what is believed to be methamphetamine, translating to around 4 million doses with an estimated street value exceeding $50 million.
This operation marks the most significant drug bust in the Prairie Region to date, intercepting a shipment that was en route to Winnipeg.
Per the news release, the individual responsible for transporting the illicit cargo was apprehended at the scene and has since been charged with importation of methamphetamine and possession with intent to traffic, in accordance with the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The accused is slated for a court appearance today.
“This substantial seizure by the Canada Border Services Agency means that approximately 4 million illicit methamphetamine doses will not reach our streets and takes away over 50 million dollars from the hands of organized crime networks and local drug traffickers,” stated Inspector Joe Telus, Federal Policing, Manitoba RCMP in a news release.
“These drugs were destined not only for the streets of Winnipeg, but throughout Manitoba and beyond. There is no doubt this shipment would have inflicted significant harm to our communities.”
Officials while highlighting the role of vigilant border control in maintaining public safety emphasized the importance of community tips in assisting law enforcement efforts.
