Events Description
Alison Reid (The Woman Who Loves Giraffes) offers a tenderly offbeat look at artist Robert Bateman and biologist/filmmaker Bristol Foster and their decades-long friendship. The Art of Adventure captures the sense of discovery the two friends enjoyed during their global tour in the 1950s. Visiting Africa and Asia in their Land Rover dubbed “The Grizzly Torque,” Bateman painted the splendid sights of the world, while Foster captured the inspiring locales on film. The documentary observes as the friends seek to reclaim the Grizzly Torque decades later with new perspectives about their responsibilities as artists. The archival footage from the friends’ trip will surely inspire some travel plans, but also to dive into the life’s work of two extraordinary Canadians who continue to capture the wonders of the natural world with intense passion. The film makes an especially strong case that Bateman’s work is under-appreciated in the Canadian canon. He might not have a painting in the National; Gallery, but this festival circuit favourite shares his work on a grand canvas that does him justice.
