I attended the three-day Hyperspace Festival at the Rickshaw facility on the last day, Saturday, April 13, 2024.
I’m not sure whose idea the beach balls were, but they were extremely distracting as they caught my eye when they went up in the air, and I had to look at each one for a second to make sure I wasn’t going to get hit in the face by something that had been on the ground and touched by many people. I hope the quality of the music is such that you don’t need distractions for the audience, and honestly, I came for the metal music, not for the beach balls. If I wanted those, I would have gone (it’s in the name) to the beach. With 3 or 4 of them up in the air at times, I felt the need to keep my hands up at all times, which isn’t how I consume my music.
What was worse was when I went into the lobby to speak to a manager to suggest not having beach balls at the next event, one of my worst customer service experiences of my life occurred. The lady who checks the tickets didn’t know anything about beach balls, who the manager was, and said something vague about a tour manager, but didn’t know who it was or where s/he’d be. My next stop was the bartender, who is the owner or manager in some establishments. I cannot say enough bad things about how this man treated me, especially for someone who is in a “people” industry. He didn’t know who the Rickshaw manager was either, or who I should speak to, but instead of apologizing and saying he didn’t know who I should talk to, he instead argued with me, accused me of ruining other people’s fun, and at one point said “get out of my face”!!! He said if I had a problem, I should go pick up the beach balls myself.
My request is for an apology regarding this kind of treatment and service, and a suggestion that “employees” of an establishment, whether they are actual employees, contractors or work for someone else but are on the premises, know who the manager is for customer complaints. I cannot differentiate between who works at the club, who is part of the festival or tour, or who is completely independent, if that’s how that works. Everyone should know who is in charge. The bartender should be disciplined, and ideally not have customer interaction because he is an angry human being. And please, have no more blow-up toys of any kind at any of the events.
