Grocery Rebate: This is How Much You Will Get on July 5th

The one-time Grocery Rebate, with a maximum amount of $153 per adult, $81 per child, and $81 for singles, is an increase to the maximum amount of the Goods and Services Tax Credit (GST/HST credit) for January 2023.

Who*:

To be eligible for the Grocery Rebate, Canadians must meet certain criteria, including being considered a Canadian resident for income tax purposes and filing their 2021 tax return.

The eligibility for the GST/HST credit, which is a basis for determining the rebate amount, requires individuals to be at least 19 years old, have a spouse or common-law partner, or be a parent living with their child.

The rebate payment is calculated based on family’s net income, the number of children under 19 years old registered for the Canada child benefit, and the GST/HST credit.

The federal government says you will receive the Grocery Rebate if you were entitled to receive the GST/HST credit for January 2023 with the amount calculated based on your family situation in January 2023 and your 2021 adjusted family net income.

Canadians with a family net income of less than $39,826 in 2021 will receive the full Credit amount. The credit gradually reduces as income increases and is fully phased out at about $49,166 for a single person without children and at about $58,506 for a couple with two children.

For the GST credit, your adjusted family net income threshold based on family structure in 2021 must be below the following:

Single person: $49,166
Single parent with one child: $55,286
Single parent with two children: $58,506
Single parent with three children: $61,726
Single parent with four children: $64,946
Married/common-law couple with no children: $52,066
Married/common-law couple with one child: $55,286
Married/common-law couple with two children: $58,506
Married/common-law couple with three children: $61,726
Married/common-law couple with four children: $64,946

How Much:

Eligible recipients can expect additional financial support, such as up to $467 for eligible couples with two children, up to $234 for single Canadians without children, and $225 on average for seniors.

For instance, a single mother with one child and a net income of $30,000 will receive $386.50 for groceries in addition to the $1,160 she receives through the GST Credit. Similarly, a single senior with a net income of $20,000 will receive $233.50 for groceries alongside the approximately $701 received through the GST Credit. A couple with two children and a net income of $35,000 will receive $467 for groceries in addition to the roughly $1,401 received through the GST Credit this benefit year.

The one-time maximum payment eligible varies depending on the family situation, and you can expect up to (similar to the calculation available here):

If you are single:

  • $234 (no children)
  • $387 (with 1 child)
  • $467 (with 2 children)
  • $548 (with 3 children)
  • $628 (with 4 children)

If you are married or have a common-law partner:

  • $306 (no children)
  • $387 (with 1 child)
  • $467 (with 2 children)
  • $548 (with 3 children)
  • $628 (with 4 children)

The calculation is available here

When & How:

Eligible recipients of the Grocery Rebate will receive it automatically, without the need for an application, together with their increased July GST Credit payment for the benefit year 2023-24.

The rebate will be delivered to qualified Canadians on July 5, 2023, through direct deposit or cheque by the Canada Revenue Agency.

As with other benefits, if you do not receive the payment on July 5th, it is advised to wait for 10 business days before contacting the CRA.

You are so right brother the government prints money for stupidity and in the meantime the value of our money drops internationally and the people that really do need help do not get the support from the federal or provincial governments but they give money to immigrants so that way they will vote for them and they look good the dumb people that live here don’t deserve anything especially the people that are not capable of working that have been hurt on the job or whatnot it is so sad that people think Canada is so great yeah great to the immigrants that come here that get all the help but God forbid you were born here and need help good luck 😡

The whole lot of you complaining about immigrants getting money, that they are forgetting about seniors and the disabled, first of all, fuck you- find someone else to strawman and whatabout, this isn’t about immigrants, it isn’t specifically for immigrants. In case you haven’t noticed we are in an affordability crisis that applies to everyone who are low to modest income. Yes, that includes you if you make below the maximum eligibility income a year.

Second of all, your assistances you are on are not federal. They are provincial. If our prime minister is your provincial leader then bitch all you want, but if he isn’t, then bitch to your provincial leaders about your assisted income. Do it. write to your representatives.

Thirdly, I, a born and raised Canadian citizen on social assistance and disability- I am employable but with obstacles, got both this and my gst. I am no immigrant, I’m not even a person of colour. I’m some white boy in saskatchewan. Stop your belly aching bitching and complaining about immigrants and POC. you’re some some dickhead who wants someone to blame for your problems, see a counsellor, go into therapy.

I am a bit furious with you Justin Trudeau, I just got my gst terminated for the rest of my life. May God bless you always. The only thing that has put a smile on my face is having the rights to vote you out!! I have aids for 30yrs. on CPP disability and Ltd. Disability and live in poverty and rent will be unreachable. You are responsible for the 20,000.00+ I owe you for Cerb. I have a drug addiction, and I was not in the right mindset for many reasons. You even held back my food rebate?? You have to reach out to me and explain why I don’t deserve a break???

The govt lets so many into our country and gives them more money then the Canadians who are living in poverty.
It’s great to help immigrants but you don’t take care of the most vulnerable canadian citizins. Seniors and disabled should NOT live in poverty!

$19.50 a month wow that’s awesome… Since no one will hire me due to liability issues with my disability I want the Ontario government to stop stealing my CPP disability amount and use it as my extra income amount you are allowed to make on ODSP!

where does the govt. get the money. They don’t earn money buy producing anything. So they have to print the money and inflate the money supply. So prices will be higher. Thus creating more inflation. What i want if for them to stop spending.

It is not clear as the govt. has not released the income eligibility. CRA website states, “New proposed Grocery Rebate –
In Budget 2023, the government proposed a one-time Grocery Rebate to provide financial support to eligible individuals and families. The rebate is tentatively scheduled to be issued July 5, 2023 along with the next regular quarterly GST/HST credit payment.

More information will follow in the coming weeks.”
