Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland today announced Grocery Rebate, a targeted inflation relief for 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families, as part of the 2023 federal budget.
The one-time Grocery Rebate, with a maximum amount of $153 per adult, $81 per child, and $81 for singles, is an increase to the maximum amount of the Goods and Services Tax Credit for January 2023.
According to the budget, eligible Canadians would receive an additional GST payment equivalent to twice the amount received in January.
This means that eligible couples with two children can receive up to an extra $467, while single Canadians without children can receive up to an extra $234, and seniors can receive up to an extra $225.

In short, the new Grocery Rebate is the same amount the federal government paid with the doubling of GST rebate last November.
When the GST tax credit was doubled last year, Canadians with a family net income of less than $39,826 in 2021 received the total credit amount, and the credit gradually reduced as income increased and was fully phased out at about $49,166 for a single person without children, and at about $58,506 for a couple with two children. The eligibility for grocery rebates will be similar, but the exact qualifying amount will depend on when the rebate is disbursed.
Announcing the rebate, Freeland said, “For 11 million Canadians and Canadian families, a new Grocery Rebate will help make up for higher prices at the checkout counter—without adding fuel to the fire of inflation.”
This measure will cost the government $2.5 billion.
Once the 2023 budget passes in the parliament, the one-time tax-free payment will be paid automatically through the Goods and Services Tax Credit system.
Update: Eligible recipients of the Grocery Rebate will receive it automatically on July 5th.

I did’nt get my GST rebate because i owe CRA, Could’nt they wait until i start work. Not fair at all.
I received cerb in 2020 so my income was above the limit. For 21 and 22 I was below 20000 for the year. I did not receive the grocery rebate. I need grocery money now. Why is this based on what I made 3 years ago?
This grocery rebate no sense. My 4 adult children living at home received it but they do not buy groceries. My wife and I did not receive the rebate and it is US that buys the groceries. Typical.
That is a lot of money to not get.
Don’t owe covid and dont have tax debt.
Might as well jump in front of first truck
I will NEVER do taxes again.
BC PWD living several thousand under the line of poverty. I’ve filed my taxes, I don’t owe any money to GUV. My income hasn’t changed for years. I didn’t receive the Grocery Rebate. I received the July 5 2023 GST that was $100 less than usual.
Where’s my rebate? I live in poverty made less than 20,000.00 I am single and disabled?

I got my usual gst, but nothing said about Food money. Thanks for nothing cra
CRA will probably be EXTREMELY SHADY and not give the (TAX FREE GROCERY REBATE) to people who owe them money.that will be one of the lowest things they could do to people right now.times are harder now than they were during the pandemic.give the people the money for gods sake.
Why was I expecting 234.00 for grocery rebate and now it says 153.00
I GUESS I WONT GET THE MONEY I OWE THE CRA
