25 of the Best Things to Do This Winter in Edmonton – 2026

Despite the chill, Edmonton’s winter is bustling with excitement. The city welcomes the return of beloved winter festivals like the Byzantine Winter Fete, Flying Canoe Volant, Silver Skate Festival, and Ice on Whyte.

If you can’t make it for the festival dates, there are plenty of outdoor winter activities to enjoy around the city, many of which are free, like skating, sledding, and winter walks. There are numerous ways to make your own fun this winter in Edmonton, whether for your family, your friends, or for a special date night.

I. Outdoor Winter Fun in Edmonton

1.   Winter Walks with a Warm Drink

While it looks and seems cold out there, Edmonton’s River valley offers up several places to take a nice, sheltered walk among the snowy trees. These paths are all riverside and also provide some spectacular cityscapes in certain spots. If you’d like to take a simple winter walk, but remain warm throughout, here are a few suggestions of river valley parks with nearby local cafes:

Where:

  • The Legislature Grounds (10800 97 Ave NW) & Remedy Café (10279 Jasper Ave)
  • Mill Creek Ravine (access via 77 Ave or 76 Ave NW) and The Public Market in Ritchie (7727 98 St NW)
  • Rundle Park (2909 113 Ave NW) & ANVIL Coffee House (6148 90 Ave NW)

2.   Outdoor Skating

Edmonton has several outdoor skating rinks from which to choose this winter, all of which provide a bit of a different skating experience. Rundle and Victoria both offer long and lit iceways that lead into open and larger oval rinks.  The Meadows is a smaller iceway, great for southside families with smaller kids. Jackie Parker Park is another south rink where you’ll find space for outdoor fires.

Ice Grooves and Swing ‘n Skate: Join the EAC for Winter City Weekends at Churchill Square, featuring Ice Grooves and Swing ‘n Skate with free skate rentals. Ice Grooves brings live DJs to City Hall Plaza every Friday night for a skate and dance party. Swing ‘n Skate, on Sundays at City Hall, offers a lively mix of swing, big band, and more, with music broadcast for outdoor skaters. This winter extravaganza starts in January and offers vibrant entertainment and skating fun.

Urban skiing and snowboarding is a unique feature for any city to have, and we are lucky with more than one in Edmonton. We have several downhill areas, in fact, where you can hone your skills before you hit the mountains. These local ski hills are also great places to bring families and teach beginners or kids. Your chairlift/T-bar views vary between each from downtown lights to the river valley, the open prairie, and Edmonton’s ravines.

4.   Cross-country Skiing

Our extensive park system in Edmonton affords us all sorts of unique ways to get outside in winter with cross-country skiing being one of the popular methods of winter exercise in those parks. Together these trails include Gold Bar, Capilano, and Rundle Parks, as well as the Strathcona Wilderness Centre.

5.   Snowtubing

One of Alberta’s newer attractions takes downhill tobogganing and puts an extreme twist on it. Rather than sled down the hill slowly, the three Snow Tube Parks in Edmonton let you race down the hills at wicked speeds. This is a kid-friendly activity, and suitable for family outings. You can find tube parks at the Edmonton Ski Club, Rabbit Hill, and the Sunridge Ski Area.

6.   Climb the ACC Ice Wall

You can find ice-climbing in a few Rocky Mountain locations within Alberta, but just like skiing and snowboarding, ice-climbing is a mountain activity in the heart of Edmonton. The ACC Ice Wall is a unique way to get some rock or ice climbing experience over winter. Even kids can participate in the fun, granted they are with an adult over 18.
