Events Description

Our perspectives are shaped by our experiences and the information we encounter. We bring those perspectives to every conversation. Few conversations in Canada are more important and touch as many lives as those around the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.

To create a space for learning about residential schools and their ongoing impact, the Circle for Democratic Solidarity, the Aurora Foundation and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights will host a special opportunity for people to come together in person, learn from Survivors and experts, and share their thoughts in discussion with each other.

Using a powerful model of civic dialogue originating in Germany, the event will pair two people face‐to‐face to discuss their understandings and learnings about the residential school system. These models of in‐person dialogues have proven to be effective at building empathy and understanding.

You will also have an opportunity to ask questions of experts in attendance and participate in ceremony led by Elder Robert Greene, the Museum’s Elder in residence.

Special guests will share their perspectives.

They include:

  • Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada
  • Survivors of Canada’s Indian Residential School System;
  • Senator Marilou McPhedran.

Discussion groups will bring together people who might have different levels of understanding or views to help bridge divides that can be more difficult to span in online conversations.

Who should participate — and why?

This event is designed for anyone who wants to better understand the legacy of the Indian Residential School system.

Whether you want to know more or to find out if what you think you know is true — or if you simply want to share your perspective in a respectful dialogue — you are welcome.

Register to take part. Once registered, you will receive more information via email, and will be asked to complete a short survey about residential school issues so that you can be matched with a one‐on‐one conversation partner. The matching software protects confidentiality and privacy; your survey responses will not be associated with your name, available to organizers or stored.

The event will be presented in English with ASL interpretation. Our building strives to be accessible to all.
