Events Description
Stewart Copeland: Tyrant’s Crush
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
Photo: Anton Gruhn.
Stewart Copeland, the legendary drummer from The Police, wrote his first concerto with his own performance in mind. Tyrant’s Crush explores the under-celebrated virtuosity of the symphonic percussion section.
Copeland was profoundly influential in the life of WSO’s Music Director, Daniel Raiskin, as a youth. And now, Daniel appears on stage with his son and drum soloist, Ilia, for the first time to perform a work composed by his drumming idol.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is a work of noble simplicity and beauty. A brooding opening gives way to an exhilarating work. Scored in a Classical fashion, it still offers innovations throughout.
