Winnipeg Public Library has announced that it will be moving to a Fine Free model. The library will no longer charge overdue fines on any item but replacement costs will still apply for lost or damaged items.
Starting January 1, 2021, items borrowed will not have overdue fines charged and all those with existing fines will have those fines cleared. The borrowing fee for adult DVDs and Blu-rays will also no longer be charged.
Those who have had their library cards blocked due to accumulated fees and fines will now be able to use their cards as the Library is clearing fines from those accounts. Replacement costs for lost or damaged items will remain on accounts.
The move by Winnipeg Public Library follows the same by many North American Libraries including those in Canada including Calgary, Saskatoon, and Halifax.
